Why do I hold my breath during a massage?

Why clients hold their breath.

If there is something that many clients forget to do during a massage, it's to breathe. I'm not talking about involuntary breaths that keep us alive, I'm talking about deep mindful breaths. When clients hold their breath during a session, it's usually due to discomfort when the practitioner works on a tender area. Their body will start to guard against the pressure and the muscles will tense up which causes them to... you guessed it! Hold their breath.

Mild discomfort is OK during a massage. As long as the tender work is tolerable- not painful.

How breathing helps the body relax during massage.

Steady, deep breaths can help immerse the client into the parasympathetic state (rest and digest). It's the body's way of saying, "This is a safe environment. I can let my guard down." Their digestion proceeds, blood pressure drops, and the muscles can relax. The body surrenders and welcomes the work.

How this helps the massage therapist work more effectively.

Deep breaths also help the practitioner sink into deeper layers of tissue without forcing our way in. We only go as deep as the body will allow us. When we encounter resistance, we wait rather than push through it. (as long as we're not pinching any major arteries, nerves, etc.) This is often done during the exhale. Each breath out creates a little more space, allowing us to work deeper with less effort and discomfort.

Over time, the client's body grows accustomed to the touch and the tender sensations are a minor nuisance to the work.

The importance of communication and trust in massage therapy.

It's important to find a practitioner who is patient, listens to your body, and who knows when to back off. That balance is key. It shows the client that the practitioner is listening and respecting their limits. That trust often leads to better outcomes, a better overall experience, and stronger long-term client relationships. So take a deep breath, and treat yourself to a massage.
